MLM and Affiliate Programs – A Review
MLM and Affiliate Programs – A Review
A short review of the Multi-Level Marketing and affiliate program difference.
Many of us just starting out may not be aware that there is a difference.
In MLM, the goal is to bring a huge number of prospects into your program. The basic layout is a paid fee arrangement. You can sell the service as long as you yourself maintains a subscription to the service. The service may be a cosmetic product, a legal service, life insurance, candles or a host of other goods.
The advantage is you have many people working to bring in more people and you earn from the efforts of each of the members you referred. You earn from their monthly purchase and from the monthly purchase made by the people they refer.
The disadvantage is you need to have a lot of people under you in order to make good money. You’ll need to be able to recruit.
The affiliate program is a free to sell arrangement . You sell the product and make a commission of each sell. The product is usually a one-time purchase such as an e-book.
The advantage is the commissions are higher than in MLM. You don’t have to subscribe or make monthly purchases. You don’t recruit.
The disadvantage is the products are higher priced and more difficult to sell to a general audience.
Different program schemes.
There are different ways of laying out the two programs. All the make money sites on the net fall either into a MLM or affiliate program. A MLM can have an affiliate aspect and an affiliate program can have multiple levels.
Because of the nature of people, these variations brings us to our next topic.
Get Rich Quick Schemes.
Some of you are involved in pyramid schemes without knowing. The legalities are for the lawyers. Let me tell you why the scheme is bad for business. Your business.
If the only way to make money with your current program is to recruit others, you are going to recruit people into a program that will fail. Your recruits will blame you. They will say you took their money.
These programs reach a critical mass very quickly and collapse, leaving hundreds sometimes thousands of recruits out in the cold.
The first people into the program build extremely huge down lines. When the matrix turns or flips or goes upside down, your turn on top will net you a few dollars. This will keep you in, recruiting. By the time it flips again, the program is done. It’s shut down or the payment processor freeze the account or the ISP shut them down because of spam complaints. Whatever the reason, the program ends with you and your recruits out of money.
You will not have these people follow you into your next business venture.
Running a legitimate business.
The first step in having a legitimate business is having your own website. Your ownership of a website will allow you the flexibility to address any problems you encounter in marketing.
It will allow you to get information to your recruits without being totally dependent on the program you are promoting.
It allows you to take charge. To be in command. To provide leadership and direction.
The old school way of marketing has generated a great deal of wealth. It has also generated a great deal of frustration to the average, ordinary, work hard affiliate let you and me.
Which program should I work with?
I prefer the affiliate program for some of the following reasons:
- You can affiliate yourself with a number of sites selling similar products.
- You can easily end the relationship since they don’t have your credit card number.
- Affiliate sites are masters at selling my prospects.
- They are not get-rich quick schemes.
What’s the next steps?
Preparation is the key to success. Find out what you want to sell. Find a niche you can thrive in by researching keywords and demand.
Find your passion and build your website. It is not as hard as you think. Stop following and lead. Treat your business like a business. Don’t jump in feet first with the new fad that gets thousands of visitors to your site overnight. Don’t let you get in your way.
