First, if you haven’t already, you want to draw out a detailed map of your most productive day. Think about days where you’ve really brought in the money and recreate that on paper.
It’s important to have a schedule; it’s great to have a schedule that works. By mapping out your day, you have time lines to stick to. This will help you keep from getting distracted, if you know you have one hour to answer all you e-mails you won’t spend thirty minutes on one with your cousin. Next you want to examine what activities you do that directly bring you money. These activities are your marketing activities, your product building activities, and any other work direct into money making projects. Answering e-mail, your phone, checking web-site stats, surfing through forum and/or websites, key word research, and education cannot be considered direct money making activities. Instead these are activities that keep your business flowing and prepare you for your money making activities. These are the first activities that are best for outsourcing, unless you are outsourcing for increased talent, which is also a very valuable move.
Now, looking at the activities in your business that directly bring you money, it’s probably fairly easy to see that the vast majority of your time is spent on other activities. Since the purpose of business is to make profits the third thing you will want to do now is reorganize your schedule. However, try not to jump right to this step. By first creating a schedule for a normal day you are able to see how to expand you profits, through organization. It is important to be organized before you try to rearrange what you already do. Move things around in a mess so that a few are in the center and you still have a mess, it’s never easy to focus on any one thing when looking at a mess.
By organizing you day to the pattern of your best days you set up the guidelines to a new system of increased profits. Now, I find that if you have new products to build, generally you see a big spike in productive hours but a short drop in incoming profits. However, it is important during the creation of a product, to not stop your marketing campaigns on pre-existing products and to even begin the marketing for your new product, drop a few hints, plan for a few campaigns, build resources in preparation for the launch.
When building a new product I think it works best to focus two solid hours of concentration on the product in the morning. By solid hour I mean no distractions, build your product! In the start of the day your mind is fresh and it is the best time for new activities. In the afternoon, focus a solid hour on continuing the marketing of your existing products, this is vitally important for your new product as existing customers are generally the easiest to market too, keep building that database! Finally in the evening put a solid thirty minutes into developing material and/or actually begin marketing for your new product. Hype it up on forums, give a sneak peak to databases, pre launch is crucially important. This work may inspire ideas for your product, if you have the energy, ideas, and will, put in another hour on your product. This much productive time during the creation of your product screams success, but keep it diversified, so you don’t create an imbalance that requires more time spent on non money making activities later to clean it up.
During non product creation time, I find generally it works quite well to break up your money making activities into three solid one hour blocks. Any new marketing campaigns and activities, focus an hour on in the morning. Existing marketing campaigns and hour in the afternoon, and for other projects you involved in to make money, an hour in the evening if necessary.
