MLM Sales Techniques Mask True Strengths
Have you ever tried to apply network marketing sales techniques to rid yourself of certain core personality traits that you felt were getting in your way of true network marketing success? After all, you really have to have guts to be able to walk right up to total strangers and tell them your “15 to 30 second” product success story. I definitely didn’t have any guts when it came to that kind of thing. Anyway, the theory is that if you did the drill enough times you would desensitize to the rejection, which is the ultimate self improvement goal…or is it?
A common assignment from your upline leader might be to talk to five strangers a day and tell them your product success story. Of course, you were also to get their contact information, e-mail them a link and then follow up with them. But that involved a whole other set of core personality traits to overcome…
I DON’T LIKE TO INTRUDE
You can probably relate to being a fairly private person. Most people are. Don’t be mistaken. You love people. But the last thing you would want to do is make people uncomfortable by intruding on them. You prefer to give people their space unless it seems very appropriate and comfortable to speak with them.
In my case, I would much rather listen to people talk about their lives instead of tell them about mine. I truly love to listen to and relate to people but I reserve the private stuff, like a 30-pound weight loss, for those I am really close to.
DESENSITIZATION DIDN’T WORK
You may have looked into network marketing self-improvement tools but, unfortunately, they involved ignoring your core personality traits. Conventional network marketing self-improvement tools come in the form of MLM sales technique seminars and tapes. The point was to study the sales techniques of highly successful network marketers who had gone before you and put their techniques into action. If you practiced their sales techniques enough times, surely you would desensitize to the internal conflict you felt when approaching strangers with your network marketing opportunity.
ARE YOUR “DEFECTS” REALLY STRENGTHS?
In other words, instead of embracing your core personality traits for the strengths that they truly are, you started looking at them as defects. You tried to “sales technique” your way out of them. Wow! THAT is a losing battle that leaves you full of self-doubt.
HOW DARE SHE!
At one point, one of my upline leaders started to critique the way I spoke. This was after an attempted 3-way call that didn’t go too well. She began telling me that my choice of words and the number of times that I used the word “Um” HAD to be corrected. She said I spoke in a very disempowering manner and she could hear my lack of confidence. She may as well have just punched me in the stomach. Everything about how I spoke was wrong according to her. Guess how many 3-way calls you’d want to do with her after that?
It’s the kind of thing that leaves you feeling less confident instead of more confident. Instead of becoming less self-conscious, you start becoming more self-conscious. You start to see your network marketing business dreams of helping people and achieving financial freedom and time freedom fade away.
Could the reason that my speech was so disempowered be because I was so uncomfortable about the sales techniques I was attempting? I would argue, “Yes! 1000 times Yes!”
EVER TRY ACCEPTING YOURSELF?
Contrast all that to working with a network marketing mentor who encourages you to accept yourself for exactly who you are. Find a mentor who knows how to put your core personality strengths to work for you … who can give you a support system made up of professional network marketers with years of MLM experience. THE ROAD TO MLM SUCCESS
The road to success in network marketing involves being a part of a supportive team (a Mastermind group). Accepting AND EMBRACING your core personality traits for the strengths they truly are is essential. The second you realize that you are perfect just the way you are is the second you’ll begin to build wealth.
Learn to capitalize on what you do best and learn how to listen to your intuition and creativity as opposed to learning torturous sales techniques that no one will want to duplicate anyway. There may be self-improvement work to do, but it won’t take the form of vomiting your 30-second story all over a total stranger. I can guarantee you that.
