MLM Cold Calling Sucks In Network Marketing
There are a lot of companies that teach network marketers to go their warm markets first and then buy business opportunity leads and start calling them.
What happens is you now becoming nothing more than a glorified telemarketer. We all HATE telemarketers. When a telemarketer calls me around supper time I let them down gently because I know they are just trying to make a living. However, having cold called myself I know that the majority are very negative on the phone.
You have to be a certain type of individual to enjoy much less do well at cold calling. When I first started calling leads I was scared to death. I’m sure many of the leads I called could sense my fear over the phone. It was a gruelly process to push through my fear and just do it. It took me a number of months to get to the point where I had a good relaxed posture on the phone.
The following is what I had to go through while cold calling. I want you to think is cold calling really duplicatable for network marketers?
1. Massive Rejection
I would face an endless amount of nasty people on the phone. I would get hung up on, laughed at, and sometimes cursed out.
2. Endless Sorting
I would buy a list for $150.00. I was told that the leads were deliverable and that the prospects were interested in a home based business (not necessarily a network marketing business). I would then take my list and have to weed through bad or disconnected numbers as well as answering machines until I finally got to one person I could talk to. This was very time intensive. I would come home from my day job, spend two hours in the evening cold calling strangers and I would hope to actually carry on a conversation with one person. The worst part was that if I purchased a hundred leads for $150.00 and could not produce a sale or get a recruit I just lost my money. The thing that I had to learn the hard way was that you can only expect a 1-3% return on a 100 generic business opportunity leads. I never found a company in all my months of cold calling that provided a 100% deliverable leads.
Now here’s the kicker, I recruited some people on my team, but not one of my recruits was willing to do what I just did. No one was willing to go through the massive rejection and the sorting process. The only reason I was doing it was because through the help of personal development books, audios, cd’s, dvd’s, etc. I had grown to the point that I could face my fear and not care what anyone thought about me. My mental attitude was tough. I had a “I don’t give a crap” attitude. You will either listen or I would hang up and move on. There was no slowing me down.
Now if it took me a year of personal development growth to get to this point and a ton of commitment to cold call, how could I expect a brand new recruit to pick up a list and duplicate?
In my opinion, this is why cold calling sucks and we as network marketers should not be using this marketing strategy to build are teams.
Usually uplines tell their downlines to cold call as a last resort when they run out of warm market prospects. It is a horrible way and an unstable way to build a business. Your attrition rate will be astronomical.
