In MLM You’re A Business Owner And A Leader
A few days ago, I was replying some comments on my MLM blog when I came across a great question from Marti. She asked:
“I have only been involved in internet marketing for the past two months. How do I create value when I haven’t built a downline yet. I don’t think my friends and family would be interested. – Regards Marti”
I can really relate to this question. When I first started out in network marketing, I didn’t want to have to bug my friends and family. So I opted to work in what we call the “cold market” in MLM.
I spent huge amounts of time and money purchasing and contacting leads. Fast forward four months later? All I had to show for it was one person in my downline, and a large dent in my bank account.
I became exceedingly discouraged. My upline gave me no answers, only “get on the training calls,” “adjust your posture” etc etc.
But my mind continued to struggle with the same question Marti does. How do I build value when I don’t have a downline? And furthermore, how on Earth could I emulate the success others had had with this business?.
I knew that if I signed up a new associate, they would have to be willing to dig deep into their pockets and had to have a very strong will power. Lets be honest here, not everyone has the gift of the gab. Talking comes easy to some and not others. The skills required could be learnt, there is no doubt about that, but the question is; will they learn fast enough, or will they soon throw the hands up in frustration and give within a few months?
I finally hit rock bottom. I’d had enough of throwing away my hard earned cash by buying worthless leads. So I quit the business I had put so much effort into. I started afresh, educating myself and learning everything I could about how to make this business succeed..
It was during this time that I came to a realization about the way I look at my business. BUSINESS. That word really struck a cord. The thing is, I had never considered it as “MY BUSINESS.” I realized that if I was a BUSINESS OWNER, I had to start acting like a leader. I took action and created web sites and combined them with an auto-responder email series. And guess what? Because of this, prospects started knocking on my door, wanting to join “MY BUSINESS.” I did not have to spend ridiculous amounts on leads. I generated my very own leads who were already interested in the opportunity I had to offer.
When a prospect contacted me, all I had to do was show them what I do, and how the business works. They immediately saw the value in my system and could visualize themselves successfully duplicating it.
Not having a downline is not an excuse to give up in this business. It definitely does not mean you can’t offer value. You character, and the respect with which you treat all your prospects can show them the value you bring. People are always willing to follow a good leader.
So to answer the question we began with; you don’t have to know everything about internet marketing when you’re starting out. Learn and apply every bit of information you pick up, where possible. And little buy little, you will learn everything there is to know about the business. This is the value you can bring to prospects whom are looking for a fresh start.
Remember that you are a leader. Tell yourself that you are unique and you offer unique skills. You’ll then begin to realize that everyone else believes it too! People will begin to look up to you and want you to lead them. It’s all about mindset. If you get that right, you’ll see your business grow faster than you could ever have imagined.
